It’s safe to say that Trin-i-tee 5:7 has stayed around long enough to see many ups and a lot of downs. So it comes as no surprise to them, that in this industry sometimes you gotta roll with the punches.

Trin-i-tee 5:7 is preparing to release their 7th studio project this May, aptly titled “Angel and Chanelle,” and recently went through a somewhat major change when their long-time third member Adrian, announced her departure.

You would think a shakeup like this would rattle the two remaining members, Angel and Chanelle. But that is not the case at all. In my opinion they seem even more focused and determined to succeed and spread the message of God’s love with this new CD!

How did Adrian announce that she was leaving the group to concentrate on her beauty company?

Chanelle: We had a meeting with our management and the label and we all made the decision together. And the rest is history, or the future, however you want to look at it.

What was your initial reaction? Were you worried?

Angel: I think worried is a strong word. We definitely had some concerns because we never want to disappoint anybody. Chanelle: We were never worried about what we were going to create and produce as far as music. When the press release went out that we were now a duo, everybody was like “ok.” Some people were surprised, some people weren’t.  Were you surprised?

(My response: I was a little surprised. I knew it would change the look of the group, but as far as the T57 sound, I don’t know if I was that concerned with Adrian being gone. But on the same note, I was also interested in what you would sound like without her.)

Did you know Adrian was thinking about leaving or was it a surprise?

Angel: It definitely was a surprise for us because it was something that wasn’t really planned. It’s one of those things that had us like…WOW! I didn’t know this was the direction God would have us go in. Chanelle: When it happened, we knew it was the right thing though. The studio experiences, the response from the single, the photo shoot; it just made sense and came together. Nothing surprises God, we’re the ones that are always surprised.

Will you 2 stay together or will Chanelle and Angel go off and do solo projects?

Chanelle: We always say the sky is the limit. When we came into T57 with our own style, voices, style, ambitions and we have goals that have nothing to do with T57.  But, just like becoming a duo, it just happened. So if it happens, it happens. You have to understand timing. You can do something pre-mature and it blows up in your face or you can do something late and people are like who cares. But for right now, we are very fixated on making this union we have as strong as we can possibly make it. We believe in this and that’s what it boils down to.

Was the split amicable?

Chanelle: It was an amicable split. You know it’s emotional when you go through something like this. I’d be lying if I told you we didn’t feel any emotion. I think it’s important for people to know that you have two things going on: you have business and you have a friendship. So yes it was definitely an emotional transition, but we feel positive about the business decisions we agreed upon.

After all these years how do you keep it different? Do you try to outdo yourselves from previous projects? What is the process like?

Angel: I think it’s about being the girls we are at that time. I think it’s too hard to go in and say, “I have to be better than I was last time.” That’s way too much pressure.

Who are some of the producers you worked with this time around?

Chanelle: We worked with Darkchild and Rockwilder, which was a great experience for us because they are friends of ours.  And of course we finally got to work with our hometown brother, PJ Morton! We were so happy to work with PJ. He’s a New Orleans native and we’re all from the same part of town. We lived right around the corner from each other. It’s really meaningful for us to work with our friends and we’re so proud of his success.

What is your favorite song on the new project?

Chanelle: My favorite song on the album is “Heaven Hear My Heat.” I wrote it about a relationship that I had in my life and it’s also about how Angel and I feel sometimes right before we go on stage. We will have heard a critic say something very mean or hurtful, but we just have to wipe our tears and hope that we still do what God wants us to do. It kind of gives you insight on what it’s like for us sometimes when we’re on stage and we’re hoping that people love and accept us.

Angel: My favorite song right now is “Over and Over.” It’s just one of those songs that makes you feel good. I’m sure I’ll have another favorite song next week, but right now it’s this one.

Are you nervous right before the album is released?

Angel: I get anxious. It’s a feeling of excitement of what people are going to think.

You ladies have been in the business since your teens. Name one artist and/or producer you would still like to work with?

Angel: I would like to work with Babyface the producer and the artist. I would love for him to produce the track and then sing on it with us. That would be like… OMG!

Chanelle: One artist I would love to work with would be Tina Turner. That would be a dream come true for me. Producer wise, I would love to work with David Foster.

Is marriage or children in the future? Are you guys dating?

Chanelle: We have a very healthy social life. And what I mean is, we have really good people in our lives that we love. We don’t really talk a lot about our relationships because we like to make sure that the focus is on our music and not our personal lives.
